“Valentine of the Earth” Action

February 14 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This Valentine’s Day, please join XRWNC for the ‘Valentine for the Earth’ action and blockade in downtown Asheville.  Read details and sign up at: https://extinctionrebellionwnc.org/

These are goals of XRWNC and the ‘Valentine for the Earth’ action:
• to be seen by others who are ready to join an extinction rebellion
• to use an uncomplicated blockade to demonstrate mass civil disobedience and make it thinkable
• to build a diverse array of skills within coordinated, decentralized work teams
• to inaugurate an ongoing quarterly cycle of action, reflection, and growth
• to double in size by the time of the next cycle
• to ready our work teams for new members
• to plow our patch of ground here in the mountains as XR continues to spread across the state (WNC, Charlotte, Durham, & Chapel Hill/Carrboro so far with more to come)
• to embrace the small steps that must be taken so that big change becomes possible

You don’t need to risk arrest to contribute to the action. We’re keeping the location of the street blockade secret until we are actually ready to leave Pritchard Park, but the location has sidewalks on both sides where anyone not participating in the blockade may stand. And you won’t just be watching–we need you there as an active participant for what we have planned.

We also need blockaders to hold space in the street. We’re building two enormous banners, each 22 ft. long, to visually anchor the scene:
(The banners are only one part of the eye-catching art we’ll be using.) We are intentionally limiting the duration of the street action to 10 minutes. Our first action is simple by choice. We will not have a permit from the city, but Asheville Police have been notified of what we plan to do. We don’t know if APD will choose to make arrests, but however it goes down, we’re ready to support each other and build our movement.

Once again, we need people for the street blockade. If that’s something you’d consider, even if you’d need more information and questions answered before you could commit to it, let us know with the sign up form on the website. XRWNC’s Training & Outreach team will be conducting an action training including a full legal briefing for blockaders. If you’ve ever thought about doing civil disobedience to build a climate action resistance movement like Extinction Rebellion, then this could be a good time to make those thoughts into reality. You won’t be alone and your courage will be contagious.

But you don’t have to wait until Valentine’s Day to make ‘Valentine for the Earth’ a success. The word about the action is out now and we need you to help push news of XRWNC out into the world. Help us find our people! You can start now by telling friends about the action. Forward this email. Recruit others to come with you. Do your piece to help this rebellion grow.
We’ll be discussing ‘Valentine for the Earth’ together in person at our general meeting this Wednesday.

Also noteworthy:  XRWNC just had an op-ed printed in the Asheville Citizen-Times. Read it at https://www.citizen-times.com/story/opinion/2020/02/01/climate-change-action-extinction-rebellion-has-come-asheville-can-answer-its-critics-opinion/4615505002/.

Comments? Questions? Let’s stay in touch. Follow us at extinctionrebellionwnc.org and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/XRWNC/. Better yet, come to a meeting or an action and introduce yourself. We need you.
