RJC-AVL & Black Wall St AVL Present Satana Deberry, J.D.
February 16 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm
The Racial Justice Coalition of Asheville (RJC) and Black Wall Street present Satana Deberry, J.D. on Friday, February 16, at 7:30 at 8 River Arts Place, Asheville, 28801. The following information was provided by RJC:
“Satana Deberry is one of only four black district attorneys of the 43 in North Carolina.
“Satana and her three siblings were raised in North Carolina by two public school teachers in the same area where her family was previously enslaved. She built a successful legal and prosecutorial career, always keeping sight of the people of North Carolina.
“Satana has served as a defense attorney in Hamlet, NC, General Counsel for the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, and Executive Director of the North Carolina Housing Coalition.
“As the Durham County District Attorney, Santana has prioritized the prosecution of serious offenses, implemented policies to reduce unnecessary pretrial incarceration and court involvement, and worked to improve trust and equity in the courts. The Durham DA’s office was the first to eliminate the rape kit backlog, and her office prosecuted more cold case sexual assault crimes than any other DA in North Carolina and oversaw the first-ever successful prosecution of a human trafficking case.
“As a mother of two who almost died in childbirth, she understands how deeply personal reproductive care is and how restrictive access disproportionately affects women of color and lower income women.
“Santana continues to address crime, including going after predatory insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies that fill our neighborhoods with opioids. Satana knows the battles earlier generations fought to give every North Carolina equal rights, which are now under attack. She leads by treating everyone fairly and protecting our rights, including our sacred right to vote.
“Satana is a recipient of the North Carolina Justice Center’s 2020 Defender of Justice Awards for Litigation, the Duke Law Alumni Association’s 2020 Charles S. Murphy Award for Civic Service, and Attorney General Josh Stein’s Dogwood Award. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Princeton University, her Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law, and her Masters in Business Administration from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.”
Light refreshments will be provided.
