If you think this makes no sense, it’s because it doesn’t. We have to pay our bills, plain and simple. Raising the debt ceiling is about paying for what we’ve already spent. Talking about future spending is a wholly separate matter. Congress has always raised the debt ceiling before, and has nearly always done so on a bipartisan basis — 78 times since 1960, as a matter of fact. And 49 of those times were under Republican presidents. During the Trump administration alone, Congress raised the debt ceiling three times in four years.

The MAGA default threat, in other words, is not based on reality. This is a manufactured crisis — which unfortunately has real-world consequences. An American default would have disastrous effects on both the domestic and global economy.

So join us Friday, May 26th at 11 am in front of Rep. Chuck Edwards’s office in Hendersonville. We’ll rally at the Henderson County Courthouse on Grove Street, with a big display of postcards telling Rep. Edwards to “Quit holding America hostage!” Then we’ll deliver postcards and petitions to his district office in the Courthouse.
