“Kids Rising: Standing Up for Families at the Border”

August 24 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm

Free

Our monthly meeting for August has been transformed into a kid-focused family-friendly event, as we join with two other local grassroots groups, Stronger Together WNC-North and Madison County Indivisible, to protest the unjust, inhumane, and often downright illegal treatment of refugees at our southern border. Recognizing that children hear and see what’s going on in the news and that hearing about the mistreatment of children and families can be upsetting, “Kids Rising” will focus on offering comfort and solace by helping kids process this disturbing situation through writing and art, with the goal of empowering them to express their feelings and stand up for families at the border.

We will also be accepting donations at the event for Pisgah Legal Services’ “Justice For All” Project, which serves immigrant children and families in Western North Carolina. NOTE: Thanks to a matching challenge funded by an anonymous donor, all donations received at Kids Rising will be matched dollar for dollar to help immigrant families in our community. If you can’t make it to the event, please make a donation in any amount at PisgahLegal.org/give. Be sure to click on “I want my donation to be designated toward” and select “Justice For All Matching Challenge (Immigration).”

Activity stations at “Kids Rising” will include:

  • CARD-WRITING TABLES, where children can write messages or draw pictures to send to the President
  • ART STATION, where kids can make and take home their own Mexican paper flowers
  • COOPERATIVE GAMES, with structured play stations for small groups; and
  • A READING NOOK featuring multi-age books that celebrate our diversity.

Parents will also have an opportunity to write cards and letters to their Members of Congress, and adults without kids will have a separate space available for letter-writing if they prefer. Fact sheets, postcards, stationery and stamps provided.

Drop by any time between 2:30 and 4:30 pm.

Join us for our first kid-focused event and help us raise funds to help immigrant families in our community! Everyone is welcome.
