Freedom to Vote Act Daily Action: Combat Corruption in Elections

November 9

During this week’s Senate recess, we’re joining with people all over the country in a coordinated #TimeToAct Week of Action, to call attention to the urgency of changing the filibuster and passing the Freedom to Vote Act now.

Day 2: Combat Corruption in Elections

Today we are asking everyone to focus on the aspect of the Freedom to Vote Act that will tackle the corruption that we have seen creep into our elections. This part of the Freedom to Vote Act will combat the dark money that allows billionaires to influence our elections. Foreign agents and bad actors have interfered in the last three federal elections, spreading misinformation and lies beginning in 2016. Despite federal law requiring that broadcast advertisement sponsors identify themselves, Congress has never updated these transparency laws to include the internet. This bill will prevent foreign agents and countries from interfering in our elections.

Choose from any or all of the following:

  1. Download and share this graphic on social media, using the hashtags #TimeToAct, #VotingRightsNow, and #FreedomToVoteAct. On Twitter, be sure to tag Senators Tillis and Burr @SenThomTillis and @SenatorBurr.
  2. Call and email Sen. Thom Tillis (202-224-6342) & call and email Sen. Richard Burr (202-224-3154). Tell them you support getting dark money and foreign agents out of our elections, and they should, too. Tell them their No vote on the Freedom to Vote Act last month was a vote for allowing these forces to continue corrupting our elections.
  3. Write a letter to the editor, stating why it’s important that we eliminate dark money in politics and prevent foreign agents from interfering in our elections. Call out Senators Burr and Tillis for their votes AGAINST the For the People Act in June and AGAINST the Freedom to Vote Act in October. Their refusal to support election reform hurts North Carolinians and voters all over the country.
