Healthcare Can’t Wait: Asheville-WNC Candlelight Vigil

June 5, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join us for a candlelight vigil to remember those who have suffered and even died simply because they didn’t have access to healthcare.

Speakers include Rev. L.C. Ray, Asheville City Councilwoman Julie Mayfield, Pisgah Legal Services Attorney Jackie Kiger, and two individuals personally affected by the coverage gap, Jody Read and Leslie Boyd.

This is part of a statewide solidarity vigil from the mountains to the sea, all taking place at the same time, because unaffordable and unavailable healthcare affects the whole state!

NC is one of only 14 states that have refused free federal funds through the Affordable Care Act (ACA) for closing the Medicaid coverage gap. We now have one of the highest uninsured rates in the country, and almost half a million North Carolinians fall through the coverage gap, not eligible for Medicaid without the ACA Expansion and not able to get subsidies on the ACA Marketplace. Currently, adults in NC aged 18 to 64 who aren’t disabled and don’t have a dependent child do NOT qualify for Medicaid, no matter how poor they are.

With positive leadership on this now in the legislature and the Governor’s office, we now have a chance to close the gap. Join us Wednesday to honor those who are affected and to send a message to Raleigh: It’s time to #CloseTheGapNC!

After the Vigil, be sure to follow up with these 5 Actions.
