Right now, we have the chance to stop one of Trump’s very worst judicial nominees: Thomas Farr, nominated to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina.
Farr is most famous as being one of the country’s chief litigators trying to advance voter suppression laws. He helped write and defend the country’s most discriminatory voter suppression law — the North Carolina bill, passed in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision gutting a key part of the Voting Rights Act, that was ultimately struck down by a federal court for targeting African American voters with “surgical precision.”
Farr also reportedly played a role in a notorious voter intimidation campaign aimed at Black voters in 1990, when he worked for ultraconservative then-Senator Jesse Helms — and to add insult to injury, he LIED about his involvement to the Senate Judiciary Committee about this during his hearing!
In addition to his work to undermine voting rights, Farr also praised a law that eliminated the right of workers to bring job discrimination lawsuits in state court.
Senate Republicans are trying to push judicial confirmations through during the lame-duck session – don’t let them get away with this. Some of the worst nominees we’ve seen could be coming up for votes before the end of the year – nominees like Chad Readler, Thomas Farr and Eric Murphy – and we need your help to stop them.
Click here to call your senators now. Tell them to oppose Readler, Farr and Murphy.
Chad Readler, nominated for the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, is leading the Trump Administration’s charge to destroy the Affordable Care Act and strip protections for people with preexisting conditions. He’s defended the immigrant family separation policy, made it harder for people of color to vote, and worked to undermine public education. For even more on Readler, check out our toolkit.
Thomas Farr, nominated for the Eastern District of North Carolina, has an appalling record on voting rights, including being implicated in a racist voter suppression scheme on behalf of the Jesse Helms campaign in North Carolina. He has weakened protections against employment discrimination and fought workers trying to unionize.
Eric Murphy, also nominated for the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals, has worked to disenfranchise voters, fought against reproductive rights, and consistently sides with special interests. Most notably, he argued against marriage equality in the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges case.
Every senator casts a vote on these nominees and has the responsibility to block those that threaten our rights. If you care about equal rights for all and halting Trump’s takeover of the judiciary, call your senators today and tell them to oppose Chad Readler, Thomas Farr and Eric Murphy. Their appointments could affect your rights and those of your family and community for years to come.
