Tree-mendous success!
Good news from the good people at Asheville Greenworks:
600 Trees Given Away this Fall!
Because of you, GreenWorks staff, volunteers, and partners gave away 512 native trees to Buncombe County residents through our Fall Tree Adoption event. Remaining trees were donated to community partners like ABTech and UNCA for campus restoration projects.
These trees are strengthening our urban canopy little by little, and contributing to something even bigger – climate resilience.
Tree equity is not just about planting trees, but about supporting communities. Starting in 2024, you may see some changes to our giveaway programs.
Since 2019, GreenWorks has given away 4,464 native trees through our 1-day county-wide Tree Adoption events. We know that barriers still exist for this event, and we’re hoping to pilot more ways to access our giveaway programs throughout the planting season.
Because the effects of climate change are not shared equally, we must focus efforts to invest in the most vulnerable communities. One way to do that is through Spring targeted giveaways that take place directly in neighborhoods. Thanks to a grant from the Legacy Tree Fund, we’re identifying priority neighborhoods by comparing the data from this summer’s heat mapping study with historic housing discrimination and health conditions worsened by heat.
