A Letter from Indivisible AVL President Robin Lively Summers
Dear activist friends,
Yesterday Republicans in the NC legislature, in a blatant partisan power grab, pushed through extremely gerrymandered voting maps designed to solidify their supermajority in Raleigh and skew NC’s representation in Congress, subverting the will of voters.
A few hours later, Republicans in Congress elected as House Speaker an extremist who advocates a nationwide abortion ban, a reversal of same-sex marriage and an end to Social Security as we know it …. and who also played a key role in the effort to overturn the 2020 election.
Now is not the time to back down
Just a few days earlier, Indivisible AVL hosted our “Turn This Ship Around!” Fall Gathering to celebrate where we’ve come, look at the redistricting and voting challenges ahead, and get started on working together for change in 2024.
We heard details of the legislature’s new voting restrictions and elections changes from special guest Jake Quinn, Chair of the Buncombe County Board of Elections. And we heard from several of our community partners – the Racial Justice Coalition, the Poor People’s Campaign, Green Built Alliance, Just Economics, Asheville Food & Beverage United (AFBU) worker-led union, the YWCA of Asheville – highlighting their work and reminding us again what a difference we can make working together.
I know we can turn things around
I’ll be honest with you. It’s not going to be easy. But with so much on the line, we can’t afford to slow down.
Indivisible AVL is working hard to fight extremism and to reach out to voters in the year ahead, but we need your help.
Developing and running strategic voter outreach campaigns takes a lot of work, but it also takes money. As a volunteer-run nonprofit, we depend on donations to fund this work.
