Indivisible AVL Awarded Grant for Canvassing Kickoff Project
Indivisible Asheville/WNC (“Indivisible AVL”) has received a mini-grant from America Votes to support our non-partisan canvassing kickoff project in November and December, “2020 Starts Now!,” and to strengthen our base as a grassroots community organizing group.
A key initiative for the upcoming election year is to empower citizens in our community through coordinated voter outreach and education, with the goals of strengthening our organization, expanding our local base of support, bolstering civic engagement, and strengthening our relationships with other groups, as part of a coordinated get-out-the-vote effort across the state. A critical part of this initiative will be non-partisan, issue-based canvassing.
Indivisible AVL Steering Committee has committed to monthly non-partisan canvassing through the year, beginning with our participation in a statewide canvass day on Sunday, December 8, 2019.
We will launch the monthly canvassing project with a “2020 Starts Now” Kickoff Event on Voting Day—Tuesday, November 5, 2019, from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, at the Stephens-Lee Recreation Center in Asheville. (See event details here.) The kickoff will include a presentation and introduction to this form of voter outreach based on the non-partisan method known as deep canvassing, which has been shown to be the most effective way of engaging less likely voters and getting them to the polls. Childcare will be provided.
The grant also includes financial support for a paid short-term Volunteer Coordinator, to help us establish a strong volunteer management system. The full Job Description and application instructions can be found in a downloadable PDF here. The steering committee is now reviewing applications and will make a decision by the end of October.
