Sign the Petition to Remove the Vance Monument from Asheville’s Downtown
The prominent Vance Monument honors Zebulon Vance, a Confederate military officer and slave-holder who served as NC Governor and U. S. Senator. This highly visible Vance Monument stands on the site of the former county courthouse, where slaves were sold and traded locally, and serves as a reminder of Asheville’s history of slavery.
In the words of this petition, “The monument looms large as a symbol of institutional racism from the past, and does not appropriately represent the values of the Asheville community today.”
