It Ain’t Over Yet! You Can Stop NC’s Abortion Ban
On Thursday, May 4, the NC legislature rushed through a 12-week abortion ban with:
NO committees review as is procedure.
NO opportunity for public comment.
NO opportunity for amendments from anyone.
NO democracy involved.
STRAIGHT to the floor for a debate and vote.
SB 20, also misleadingly named the “Care for Women, Children, and Families Act,” is the abortion bill that limits abortions to 12 weeks and adds many onerous burdens for anyone seeking an abortion and health care providers.
- It’s an assault on women’s autonomy and ignores the essential role abortion plays in maternal medicine.
- It’s government intrusion into very private decisions — from Republicans, the party of “small government!”
- North Carolinians don’t want to restrict abortion access. In a recent poll, 62% of respondents in our state said abortion should be legal in all or most cases.
Gov. Roy Cooper has the opportunity to veto Senate Bill 20 on May 13, so we have a few days to persuade JUST ONE legislator to help uphold the veto. Otherwise, the supermajority can override the governor’s veto.
Please contact the following legislators, especially anyone who is YOUR legislator, and urge them to vote AGAINST the override.
Rep. Tricia Cotham, Mecklenburg
Rep. John Bradford, Mecklenburg
Sen. Bill Rabon, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover
Please call or write to thank the following folks, who have been instrumental in standing up for women’s reproductive rights 💕:
And thank your senators who voted against this abortion bill. (Find contact info here.)
