Tell Your NC State Rep To Oppose HB 10!

HB 10 will not make our communities safer. It will further marginalize immigrant communities by fanning the flames of anti-immigrant rhetoric and sowing distrust in our communities.

Last week members of MomsRising sat with allies in the NC Senate gallery and watched as the NC State Senate passed HB 10 along party lines with 28 Republicans voting for and 15 Democrats voting against this anti-immigrant bill.

This heinous bill, which would force local sheriffs to collaborate with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and, in doing so, support the deportation pipeline, is bad for our families, our communities, our state, and our economy. The harm it would cause is immense, and North Carolina moms are disappointed, saddened, frightened, and absolutely outraged. All children deserve to live in peace and free from fear that they will be separated from their parents.

HB 10 would only increase harm to North Carolina’s immigrant communities. Families could be separated unconstitutionally if they are merely charged with—not convicted of—a crime. Those who are witnesses and victims of domestic violence or other crimes would be less likely to seek help out of fear and distrust of law enforcement.

The bill is headed back to the NC House as soon as Tuesday for one final vote before it heads to Governor Cooper’s desk. Time is running out!
