World Water Day Action March 22

Indivisible AVL’s Environmental Action Team is partnering with Defund Dapl and the Women’s Action Group of Asheville’s Environmental Committee for an important event on World Water Day, Wednesday March 22, as part of the Water is Life movement. We are petitioning Duke Energy to take responsibility for the impact that fossil fuel mining and energy production has had on our water resources.

Please Participate

Here’s what you can do:

  1. SIGN—First, sign the petition to Duke Energy, which we will deliver to the  company’s Asheville headquarters on March 22. You can sign online here, then share the link with other groups and friends via email and social media. You can also print out the petition and circulate to gather signatures. The full text of the petition is posted online here.
  2. PROTEST—Join us on Wednesday afternoon (3/22) at 4:00 p.m. in front of Duke Energy’s Asheville headquarters, at 550 Brevard Road. We will gather with our “Water Is Life” signs and deliver the signed petitions to Duke Energy, to address their responsibility in moving us towards renewable energy, in order to ensure clean water in our community and avoid a climate catastrophe. After delivering the petition, we will remain outside the office for around an hour with our signs and then head over to the French Broad River Park, a couple of miles away at 180 Amboy Road.
  3. CELEBRATE—Join us at 5:30 p.m. at French Broad River Park for an interfaith Water Blessing Ceremony to acknowledge that Water is Life. We will meet under the Pavilion and then walk down to the water’s edge. Blessing of our water will be led by Water Protectors with energy carried from Standing Rock. We are also lucky enough to have a few Cherokee women involved in guiding the ceremony, which is especially important as native women are the Guardians of water. Please contribute to a potluck of healthy snacks as we gather before the ceremony. Families with children welcome. Drums, flute, string instruments and song encouraged!
